History of Markandeya Gotra Padmasalis

Puranas :

Brahmanda Purana :

The progeny of Brighu :

(Chapter 11 - The creation of Sages (saptarṣi))

Brighu's wife Khyati gave birth to a daugher and two sons. The sons were masters of happiness and misery. They grant auspicious and inauspicious results unto all living beings. They were the gods Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ. They used to live and walkabout throughout the Manvantara. Their elder sister, goddess Śrī, purified the worlds. The splendid lady attained lord Nārāyaṇa as her husband. Bala and Unmāda were born of her as the sons of Nārāyaṇa. Tejas was the son of Bala and Saṃśaya was the son of Unmāda. Other mental sons too were born of him. They move about in the firmament. They drive and carry the aerial chariots of the Devas and persons of auspicious rites. Āyati and Niyati, the daughters of Meru are remembered as the wives of Vidhātṛ and Dhātṛ. Prāṇa and Mṛkaṇḍa of firm holy vows were their sons. They are eternal and Brahmakośas. Mārkaṇḍeya was born of Manasvinī as the son of Mṛkaṇḍa. His son Vedaśiras was born of Dhūmrapatnī. Sons of Vedaśiras  through wife Pīvarī are remembered as Propagators of the race. These sages who are well-known as Mārkaṇḍeyas (Descendants of Mṛkaṇḍa) were masters of the Vedas.

Markandeya purana :  Canto LII Apellation & Creation of Rudras & Prajapatis.

Markandeya said ( about himself) :

Khyāti the wife of Bhṛgu gave birth to the two gods Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ, and to Śrī who was the wife of the supreme god Nārāyaṇa. Āyati and Niyati were the two daughters of high-souled Meru; they became the wives of Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ. A son was born from each of them, both Prāṇa and Mṛkaṇḍa.The latter was my illustrious father. I am his son by Manasvinī; Vedaśiras is my son, he was born of Dhūmravatī.

Viṣṇu Purana :

(Chapter X - The descendants of the daughters of Daksa married to the Rsis)

Lakṣmī, the bride of Viṣṇu, was the daughter of Bhrigu by Khyāti. They had also two sons, Dhātri and Vidhātri, who married the two daughters of the illustrious Meru, Āyati and Niryati; and had by them each a son, named Prāṇa and Mrikaṇḍa. The son of the latter was Mārkaṇḍeya, from whom Vedaśiras was. The son of Prāṇa was named Dyutimat, and his son was Rājavat; after whom, the race of Bhrigu became infinitely multiplied.

Garuda Purana :

Agastya Samhita:

Ch 5 Creation of Prajapatis:

He conferred the auspicious Khyati, matchless in beauty, on Bhrigu. Bhrigu begat on her Dhata and Vidhata. He also begat Shri who was Narayana’s wife. Hari begat on her himself Bala & Ukshmadi. Ayati and Niyati were the two daughters of the high-souled Manu. They were the wives of Dhata and Vidhata. They gave birth to two sons, Prana and Mrikandu. Markandeya was the son Mrikandu.

Sri Pada Sri Vallabha Charitamrutam :

Chapter 20 :

The Account of Vissavadhāni:

Description of the divine auspicious form of Srīpāda :

Srīpāda observed, “Padmasalis belong to the lineage of Markandeya. For some reason, they became non-vegetarians. No action takes place without a reason in My presence..."

Padmasalis are descendants of Vedasiras Maharshi( son of Markandeya Maharshi) and his wife Pivari but not from Bhavana & Bhadravati because they are just an imaginary false characters from a fasle folk caste story with no standard sources or puranic references. Padmasalis are of Vedic Brahminical origin but due to Gautama Maharshi's curse to Brahmins & also due to Kaliyuga Dharma rishi origin Brahmins may take the artisan occupations such as our Markandeya Gotra Padmasalis took weaving occupations. After a long time with change in works our Padmasalis needed a caste origin history which upto shiva saving Markandeya was true but after that the story of Bhavan rishi & Bhadravati was just a created false story only."

Please my kind request to all Padmasali community to consider the right information which is provided in Puranas written by Krishna Dwaipayana maharshi who himself Lord Narayana Avatar. Don't spread the wrong information of our Markandeya Gotra of Padmasali and the story of Bhavana Rishi, Vedasiras and Bhavana rishi aren't same , they births took place in different kalpas.

Padmasali is the only caste of Markandeya Gotra which is the only one of the Brighu Vamsa Gotra that has weaving as an optional livelihood.Rest of the Brighu Vamsa Gotras are still following the Brahmin traditions. For the need of clothing in Vedic rituals, Temple services, Deity's clothing services from the Brahmin Community Markandeya Gotra Brahmins took weaving as their optional service work & Later they emerged as Padmasalis with weaving as their main livelihood. Markandeya Gotra Padmasalis at beginning used to follow brahmin traditions like Upanayam, Vedic study , Temple service etc. But now a days many of them are not anymore particularly following those Brahmin traditions. But Padmasalis are experts in textile engineering, textile designing, Hindu traditional textile designs, Cultural Dress making etc.

Now Padmasalis are given Backward Caste reservation / OBC category by the government of India because their present main livelihood was weaving.

Padmasali Mula pursha is Vedasiras maharshi , son of Markandeya and his wife pivari. Please take this message as a valueable information which we are providing with standard puranic references And Our heartly request to all Padmasali Communities after considering/ reading/ seeing this message please change the wrong information of Markandeya and Padmasali the false story of Bhavana rishi & Bhadravati which is described in respective blogs, websites, publications & messages.

  1. Can you please tell me information about lord Ganesha curse on padmashali caste as it seen Wikipedia & https://www.google.co.in/amp/s/mananeta.wordpress.com/2016/11/12/mana-charitra/amp/ is there any scriptural evidence for the curse as stated in above website

    1. Yeah, I've already seen this type of description about the curse of Lord Ganapathi on specifically on Padmasali Caste, which is also depicted as some Saint under name Sri Rama agrahara pleased Lord Ganesh and the curse is remedied with restoration of brahminical status to Padmasali Caste after 5000 Kaliyuga years. But I / we all certainly have not gathered any standard references upon this type of depiction. And more thing is that If we see the standard mahapuranas puranas and Mahabharata we are going to know two references to clarify your request :
First, is that, the Curse of Gautama Maharshi on brahmins mainly who are from sages lineage that they will be deprived from the brahminical status, will be averse to the brahminical conducts, will follow foreign sastras and abondon Vedic principles and take up mean jobs i.e., like workers, cart/vehicle drivers, atheism, religion conversions .etc gradually in Kaliyuga.

And secondly, it is general rule of every Kaliyuga that the sage lineage brahmins will be degraded, will be averse to Vedic principles and also the hinduism and also take the Sudra occupations i.e, they will be artisans and workers.

      Suggestive references :
      1. Shiva Purana - Koti rudra Sangita - Ch 24 to Ch 27 which is about Tryambakeshawara Mahatmyam, Lord Ganesh warning to brahmins sages, Sage Gautama curse.

      2. Devi bhagavata Purana : part 12- Chapter 9.

      3. Skanda Purana : Kaumarika Khanda - Chapter 40 - The Birth of Mahākāla: The Arrangement of Four Yugas

I Hope that this reply will be satisfactory to you.

    1. There's no specific kuladevata mentioning in the texts for Markandeya Gotra. But the conduct of following vedic principles as possible and non dualistic view on Hari Hara is prescribed for this Gotra.
